Tennessee opposes sports betting
A Senate Panel has voted to recommend against legalising sports betting in Tennessee as the Legislature debates the segment.
US.- Sports betting continues to take over the US but it may take a little extra effort to pass it in Tennesse. On Wednesday, a Senate panel voted to recommend against passing a bill to legalise the segment in the state and may stop its march into the governor’s desk.
The Senate Government Operations Committee voted 8-1 Wednesday and decided not to recommend Republican Sen. Steve Dickerson’s bill. That may hurt sports betting chances in Tennessee, but it stilll needs to be sent to another committee for a vote.
The proposed legislation would clear sports betting to launch in the state on mobile and interactive sports gambling, without land-based locations. The segment is expected to generate up to US$50 million in revenue in it’s second year, Dickerson said.
Concerns on its impact
As state lawmakers are reviewing the possibility to jump into the expanding segment, the University of Tennessee has voiced its concern about the segment’s legislation. University Director of Policy Analysis Josh Warren spoke before a House committee bill and explained there are issues related to college programs that professional teams don’t have.
“These are college students as well,” Warren told the House State Committee. “So, we just want to be very mindful of the surroundings of a college campus,” he added and suggested fellow students may propose athletes to perform according to certain individual bets.
