West Virginia studies sports betting market
State officials and casino owners are considering the options to offer sports betting after the US Supreme Court lifted the federal ban.
US.- As the US Supreme Court ruled on May 14th that the federal prohibition on sports betting was unconstitutional, states are considering their options to bring more revenue. West Virginia state lottery officials, as well as lawmakers, are now trying to get sports betting in state’s casinos.
Brad Humphreys, an economics professor at West Virginia University’s College of Business and Economics, said: “We’re ahead of the curve in terms of already having that [sports betting] law in place. Nationwide, it’s still pretty uncertain how things are going to shake out,” as WVNews reported.
The state passed a law allowing sports betting at the four casinos and The Greenbrier during a legislative session earlier this year. State Lottery Director Alan Larrick had said that officials would start drafting rules and regulations for the state’s casinos, a process that would take about 30 days. “We’re going to try to beat that if we can. We’re excited, but we’ve got a lot of work to do,” Larrick said.
