A casino in Rhode Island may become a reality

The proposal to build a casino in the state is being discussed by the Rhode Island General Assembly.

US.- The Rhode Island General Assembly scheduled a vote this week to decide if the legalisation would be send to the November ballot.

A gambling facility would guarantee at least US$3 million annually to Tiverton a town under 16,000 people.  The proposal states that the state would make up the difference if gambling gains from the video lottery machines and table games fall short.

Twin River Management Group casino wants to build the 85,000-square-foot Tiverton casino and hotel complex to replace its aging Newport Grand. The group already tried and failed to carry out an expansion as it was rejected by the voters of Newport in 2012.

This casino would challenge Massachusetts’ Plainridge Park Casino located close to the Rhode Island border. House and Senate committees scheduled Tuesday and Wednesday the hearings that may result in sending the bill to a full vote in both chambers by the end of the week. If the proposal is approved, it must then win a majority of votes statewide and in Tiverton.
