Peninsula casinos in Macau continue to expand
While Cotai casinos are expected to keep expanding, the ones on the Macau Peninsula will keep their clients’ trends.
Macau.- Macau Peninsula is expected to continue its trend of attracting clients, despite an increase of revenue and facilities in Cotai. Integrated resorts on the Strip account for approximately 60% of total gross gaming revenue (GGR).
Grant Govertsen, Managing Director, Head of Asia Equity Research, Macau at Union Gaming, told Macau News Agency that despite the high number that the Strip accounts, casinos on the Peninsula are not experiencing bad results. “The reality is that while the Macau Peninsula has seen its share of GGR decline relative to Cotai, it is experiencing growth in revenues,” he said.
Govertsen said that it is unlikely that casinos on the Peninsula will see any revenue declines, unless there is a broader “economic or political issue that causes both the Macau Peninsula and Cotai to decline similar to the anti-corruption drive from 2014 onwards.”
Ben Lee, Managing Partner at iGamix, told the news agency: “The Peninsula attracts the hard core, old fashion, value – conscious gamblers who prefer the proximity to the range of dining, shopping and entertainment amenities. Cotai attracts more status conscious and family oriented clients.” He also added that as the properties get older, operators will have to renovate their facilities in order to keep up with Cotai trends.
