Japan limits racing industry
Online betting platforms related to racing industry would be limited under new legislation.
Japan.- The government of Japan would also regulate the online gaming sector by introducing new limits to the racing industry. According to Japan Today, the updated legislation would take effect by the end of fiscal 2022 and would regulate authorised online gaming platforms offering race betting services.
“It is essential to carry out measures to prevent people from falling into unfortunate situations due to (gambling) disorder,” commented Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga last Tuesday during a meeting with national ministers.
The proposal was introduced as the Congress is planning to finally approve the expected law regulating the casino industry. Japan would soon host several integrated resorts, which include modern gaming salons. However, residents have shown strong opposition against unregulated activities and demanded serious laws preventing problem gambling.
Further changes will be added to current race betting sector that legally operates with horse, powerboat, bicycle and motorcycle racing, as local newspaper reported. The 2022’s update would restrict online access to betting platforms for Japanese residents that are considered as problem gamblers and the measure could be extended to land-based casino operations.
Meanwhile, the government ended yesterday its national tour through several cities seeking for a casino license. Japanese residents presented their arguments to authorities during the last two weeks showing big concern about anti-problem gambling legislation. The public hearing’s showed divided opinions and Japanese legislators expect to add residents’ conclusions to the upcoming casino bill, which would be debated next autumn.
