Iowa to legalise sports betting in 2019
Lawmakers, casinos and business executives in Iowa are in favour of legalising the segment once the legislature goes back in session next January.
US.- Sports betting is already making an impact in some states in the US after the Supreme Court revoked the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). However, other states still need to regulate the industry and Iowa is one of those looking forward to doing so.
As the segment continues to thrive around the world and in those states where it’s legal, Iowa’s relevant parties are very keen on the possibility of getting it approved in the legislature. Casinos, lawmakers and business executives in the State favour the arrival of sports betting as it may be a source of income and a way to shake the local economy.
Iowa State representative Jake Highfill has said that both the Republican and Democrat politicians are in favour of legalisation, and stated: “They’re all in”. In addition, casinos and lotteries are on board with the project as they would operate a comprehensive sportsbook or casual betting products respectively.
Even if sports betting legalisation doesn’t bring in as much revenue as other segments, official offerings would reduce illegal or foreign licensed websites and bring in new money for the state. However, any proposed legislation would have to beat opposition from several lobbyists in Iowa.
