Indian state may legalise casinos
The Meghalaya government is considering regulating the casino industry and allowing licensed companies to operate in the state.
India.- The casino industry may soon arrive in the Indian state of Meghalaya as the local government is considering allowing the segment to operate in the area. Local media has reported that the authorities are keen on the possibility of setting up a casino operation at Byrnihat in the Ri-Bhoi district.
The local government wants to get the industry up and running and has tasked every department related to it with a plan to get it done. The main reason behind the casino push is to get a boost for tourism in the area, which is why locals would be banned from entering and playing in the gaming floors once they open.
Though there’s a good chance the local authorities will continue to push for a casino to be opened in the state, there’s still several hurdles ahead. Not only would it have to fend off religious opponents, but it would also have to amend current anti-gambling legislation before enforcing any new rules, so there’s still a long road ahead before we get to see a gaming venue in Meghalaya.
