Employee dispute causes Greek casino shutdown

The Porto Rio Hotel and Casino in Patras has closed its gaming venue indefinitely over a dispute with employees.

Greece.- As of this week, there’s one less casino in Greece after the Porto Rio Hotel and Casino’s gaming venue shut down its operations. The venue’s operator decided to close its doors indefinitely after being involved in a labour conflict with its workers.

The casino operator had asked its employees to reduce work hours and, consequently, take a cut of up to 25% in their pay. In addition, some of them have yet not received payment for their work from over the last 14 months.

The operator’s debt is larger than US$5.6 million, the worker’s union explained, and its head, Dimitris Karageorgopoulos, recently explained that they had reached an agreement with the casino. It had been required to immediately pay US$910k but, instead, the operator decided to close its doors indefinitely.

According to the operator, the rift was actually caused by the workers and even sent them a letter saying that its survival had been threatened by the union, whose actions were forcing its hand.
