Delta casino receives nod from city
After the city approved the plans, the casino is now waiting for formal approval from the BCLC.
Canada.- The Delta Cascades Casino has been approved by a city council in Canada and it now needs the green light from BCLC. The US$70 million casino-hotel would be constructed at the Delta Town & Country site in Ladner.
“I know that there are… very passionate residents that do not support this casino application. I also know there are many, many people who support the casino application for what it will bring to Delta,” Councilor Sylvia Bishop said. “I’m satisfied that the benefits that will come to Delta outweigh the concerns that were expressed,” she added.
The proposal from Gateway Casino and Entertainment Ltd. was approved 4-2 on Monday night. Councillors Bruce McDonald said: “I do understand that many people, for very valid reasons, are opposed to gaming,” but he also noted that if a company wants to invest more than US$70 million in the city and bring 700 jobs it is hard to turn his back on the project.
During the second reading, Delta had a requirement that BCLC officially approve the plans before council gave it the fourth reading, but a letter from BCLC said that it could not give approval until the council gave that final reading. Nevertheless, BCLC vice-president Brad Desmarais said that the lottery corporation is supportive of the facility.
