Bi-partisan attempt to bring casinos to Virginia
Lawmakers in the state are coming together to allow citizens to decide if they want three casinos.
US.- A bi-partisan group of lawmakers announced on Monday that they’re promoting a casino legislation, as they said that there are three cities in Virginia’s southern border that urgently need gambling to help them revive their economies.
Republican Senator Bill Carrico and Democrat Senator Louise Lucas held a press conference where they asked other legislators and Governor Ralph Northam to allow developers in Bristol, Danville and Portsmouth to build casinos if voters approve them in a referendum.
The Senators explained that casinos and resorts would not only provide local tax revenue, but also thousands of new jobs. Northam claimed that they need a broad study that would delay the decision in order to get more educated on the subject, but supporters of the bill said that there’s no reason to wait.
“It is rare to see a cause that can unite people across people lines and regional boundaries, especially in such a politically divided environment,” Lucas said.
