Number of employees in Macau gaming sector falls in Q4

There are currently 71,600 people working in the gaming sector in Macau.

Macau.- The Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has reported that the number of full-time employees in the gaming industry decreased sequentially in the last quarter of 2024, although the decline was smaller than that seen in the hospitality and retail industries. At the end of 2024, the gaming industry had 71,600 employees, a decrease of 0.2 per cent in quarter-on-quarter terms. The figure represents around 18.6 per cent of all employees in Macau.

Total employment in Macau fell by 0.3 per cent quarterly to 378,300. The unemployment rate remained stable at 1.7 per cent while the labour participation rate dropped by 0.3 percentage points to 67.7 per cent. Employee numbers in wholesale and retail trade and in hospitality fell by 2.7 per cent and 0.7 per cent respectively to 41,200 and 30,400. Employment in construction fell by 4 per cent and the restaurant industry saw an increase of 0.4 per cent sequentially to 21,600.

Macau visitor numbers rose by almost a quarter in 2024

The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) has reported that 34,928,650 people visited Macau in 2024. The figure was up 23.8 per cent in year-on-year terms but remains below 2019 levels. Same-day visitors (18,884,882) rose by 35 per cent year-on-year and overnight visitors (16,043,768) by 12.8 per cent. The average length of stay was shortened by 0.1 day year-on-year to 1.2 days, with that of overnight visitors remaining unchanged to 2.3 days.

Mainland Chinese tourists accounted for the majority of arrivals at 24,491,424, up 28.6 per cent year-on-year. Those travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme (12,281,055) grew by 15.5 per cent in year-on-year terms. Visitors from the nine Pearl River Delta cities in the Greater Bay Area were up by 28.8 per cent year-on-year to 11,985,383.

Visitors from Taiwan reached 834,411, up 64.1 per cent year-on-year, while the number of tourists from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (Hong Kong SAR; 7,179,722) decreased by 0.2 per cent. International visitor arrivals rose by 66 per cent year-on-year to 2,423,093.

Some 27,769,490 visitors arrived by land, accounting for 79.5 per cent of all visitors and rising by 24.1 per cent year-on-year. Meanwhile, 4,094,585 visitors arrived by sea, an increase of 10.7 per cent year-on-year. 3,064,575 people arrived by air, up by 43.9 per cent.
