UK and Portugal gambling regulators sign Memorandum of Understanding

UK Gambling Commission and the Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation and exchanging of relevant information.

UK.- The UK Gambling Commission announced has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ), to cooperate and exchange relevant information.

The cooperation agreement seeks to strengthening the two regulatory bodies’ controls, improving online gambling regulations in both the UK and Portugal and fighting illegal gambling activities. Both gambling regulators have also outlined that they want to make sure that gambling is not a source of disorder and criminal activities and to prevent the vulnerable part of the population, in the UK and Portugal, from falling victim to problem gambling and exploitation.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by UK Gambling Commission Chief Executive Sarah Harrison and SRIJ Vice Chair Teresa Monteiro. As per the agreement, a mutual collaboration plan is to be implemented in a bid for the online gambling industry to be safeguarded in “a fair and open” manner.

Nick Tofiluk, Director of Regulation at the UK Gambling Commission, expressed that they are pleased with the bilateral agreement as they consider working with other regulators instrumental to an effective regulation of the online gambling industry. Tofiluk also noted that Memorandums of Understanding are excellent way of formalising and streamlining information making collaborations between international gambling authorities as efficient and effective as possible.
