Taiwan gambling bill is stepping strongly

Taiwan industry’s legalisation achieved the support of the current national government.

Taiwan.- Gambling industry in Taiwan is closer, now that the legislation project has been backed by the national ruling party, Democratic Progressive Party –DPP–. Gaming legalisation in Taiwan would boost the entire global industry as the tourism attraction for the island can generate an extensive market. The only legal game of the Asian country is state-run lottery.

The national government in Taiwan justified its support of the gaming bill by recognising that it would improve the economy and employment rate. According to the international media, the DPP could be considering the end of the gambling ban and it would respect the results of the 2009 referendum, which proved that voters want outlying county islands to operate casinos. Since the vote, islands have opted to take advantage of the laws.

Taiwan has tried to pass the bill several times. The Tourism Casino Administration Act –TCA– has proposed to create a regulatory environment for commercial casinos, but the legislation has failed to pass through the legislature. Furthermore, several groups of Taiwanese residents expressed their opposition to the government decision of backing the bill. In addition, the People’s Republic of China is worried about the impact in Macau, the only Chinese territory where gambling is legal, as over 30 million of Chinese people could theoretically visit Taiwan casinos on a moment’s notice due to its proximity with Hong Kong and Shanghai.
