Swedish regulator raps operators for breaching deposit limits

The regulator has dealt fines to two operators for allowing customers to break temporary limits on online casino deposits.

The Swedish gambling regulator Spelinspektionen has served injunctions and notices of fines to two online casino operators for allowing customers to breach temporary deposit limits

The SEK5,000 (€476) deposit limit for online casinos was introduced on July 2 due to fears that Covid-19 measures could cause a rise in problem gambling. The move was accompanied by a limit of SEK100 on bonus offers.

The regulator found that the operators AB Trav och Galopp and Spooniker had allowed players to break the limit by raising their deposit limits and then reducing them again after depositing funds.

Spooniker runs the bingo.se, mariacasino.se, storspelare.se and unibet.se websites while AB Trav och Galopp runs atg.se and Sammen.atg.se.

The SGA has issued an injunction ordering the two companies halt the violation and no longer allow the limit to be breached.

They will receive a fine of SEK1m for each week that the injunction is not complied with, calculated three weeks from the date the companies accept the decision.

Sweden looks set to keep the temporary online casino limits in place until mid-2021.
