Sweden’s domestic market posts flat revenue

The domestic market’s revenue was flat last year, but international online gambling sites keep thriving in Sweden.

Sweden.- Sweden’s gaming regulator Lotteriinspektionen released its annual report on Wednesday, in which it was detailed that the domestic gambling market revenue was flat in 2017. However, international online gambling sites operating without permission keep improving their performance with double-digit revenue growth.

The domestic market generated approximately US$2 billion in 2017, which is pretty much the same as the number reported in 2016. International licensed online gambling sites experienced a 14.6 per cent revenue growth to over US$6.7 billion, considerably more than the domestic market’s performance.

Among the companies that managed to post an increase during 2017’s operations, none of them had a big difference with the rest of the pack. Svenska Spel, the betting monopoly, reported a less than one per cent increase to US$9.5 billion, while ATG horse-racing company posted a three per cent increase to US$5 billion. Casino Cosmopol’s operations fell almost four per cent to US$1.3 billion.

The online gambling market revenue increased 11.4 per cent to US$12.5 billion, but only less than half of it was generated by licensed operators, with a 14.9 per cent increase to US$5.8 billion. International gambling sites held a 53.3 per cent of the market in 2017, while they also have a 24.3 per cent of the overall Swedish gambling market, up from the 16.5 per cent registered in 2012.
