Nigerian lawyer warns about underage gambling

Lawyer Juwon Gbadebo has urged the government to act on the underage betting issue that afflicts Nigeria.

Nigeria.- Underage betting in Nigeria is becomming a problem and Federal Government needs to tackle the issue, according to Ilorin based lawyer Juwon Gbadebo. He assures that minors are getting hooked to gambling and has called on the authorities to act on it.

In an interview in Ilorin, the legal practitioner condemned the deluge of underage players into betting centres across the African country such as Bet9ja, NairaBet, Bet360 and Baba Ijebu. He alerts that these businesses have a major daily inflow of teenagers that is exacerbated during the school period.

“It is disheartening seeing these underage at bet houses; instead of stay in their classes studying, they are now playing gambling games during the school hours,” Gbadebo said. He also called for monitoring of bet centres from the security agents, in order to detain any minor caught in the act of gambling. “Something urgent must be done to curb the menace in order to rescue the future of this upcoming generations,’’ he advised.

The lawyer didn’t only urge the government to act but he also encouraged parents and guardians to closely monitor the movement of their children and wards and discourage them from going near the bet houses.

Gbadebo also commended the authorities to show more interest in discouraging underage gambling in order to cleanse the society but he showed concern about bet centre managers since he claims that they only care for money.
