Mixed results for Denmark’s online gambling
The first quarter of the year brought mixed results for Denmark’s online gambling market.
Denmark.- The regulatory agency from Denmark, Spillemyndigheden, reported that during the first three months of the year online gambling operators collected US$78 million in sports betting revenue, slightly down from the numbers registered in 2016.
The decline in sports betting revenue comes after betting stakes remaining almost flat at US$802 million, as CalvinAyre reported. Sports betting revenue was mainly via mobile channels, as it accounted half of the market during the first three months that ended on March 31. Desktop bets totaled 25.4 percent of the market, whilst retail wagering comes in third place with 22.5 percent. Despite these results, land-based venues reported 54 percent of individual betting transactions.
On the other hand, online casino operations were 10 percent higher during Q1 to US$61 million, with slots being the biggest attraction among Danish players. Moreover, land-based operations fell 2.3 percent to US$55 million.
Earlier this month it was reported that Danske Spil’s exclusive operations in the online bingo and horse racing sectors could end soon. The monopoly would be dissolved as authorities from the European Commission have approved a legislative plan to restructure the gaming industry in Denmark. The approval was signed on Friday 2.
