Minnesota goes forward with legislation
Sports betting could be the next legal market in Minnesota as the Legislature goes forward with bill.
US.- The Legislature of Minnesota State is soon to approve a bill legalising sports betting industry although under current federal law the measure is prohibited. Local legislators are expecting the U.S. Supreme Court to finally agree on New Jersey’s petition of changing the PASPA law to allow every state to legislate its own sports betting market.
According to Minnesota newspapers, the Legislature is taking a “behind-the-scenes effort” to legalise the industry before the final resolution on the case. State Rep. Pat Garofalo, R-Farmington, chairman of a jobs and energy committee, said: “Minnesota should act now to have the legal infrastructure in place in case the court deems the federal ban unconstitutional.”
“If the Supreme Court removes the ban, and if we do nothing, the offshore sportsbooks will flood social media and scoop up bettors who think they are regulated, legal and taxed,” added the state’s official during a debate last Monday.
Over 18 states in the US have shown interest in legalising the sports betting industry, and the US Supreme Court will soon determine whether the PASPA amendment that prohibits operations could be changed.
