Macau: dissapointing GGR in February

Macau’s gaming revenue was up only 5.7 per cent in February, which is considerably lower than the 36.4 per cent growth shown in 2017.

Macau.- The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau revealed February’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) in Macau, delivering disappointing results. During the past month, win barely rose 5.7 per cent year-on-year, which looks microscopic when compared to last year’s 36.4 per cent growth.

According to the Bureau, GGR reached €2.35 billion at the end of the second month of the year and proved to be less than the industry was expecting from the gaming hub. Therefore, despite having increased year-on-year, the figure was not what the industry was expecting, as Macau continues to grow at a high rate and had hoped to receive a more positive report.

Brokerage Bernstein blamed the disappointing figures on the timing of Chinese New Year, which happened in January last year, but fell in February this year. Furthermore, Bernstein said that looking at combined GGR for both January and February, it increased by 19.7 per cent year-on-year reaching €5 billion, in line with previous estimates.
