LVS push for casinos in Texas runs out of steam
The push by Las Vegas Sands to get Texas to legislate on the casino industry seems to be fizzling out in the Capitol as the legislative session nears its end.
US.- Las Vegas Sands has been lobbying hard for Texas to legalise casino gaming, but as the legislative session nears its end, the arrival of gaming venues in the southern state still seems a long way off.
Las Vegas Sands has been pushing House Joint Resolution 133, which would let voters decide whether they wanted Texas to legalise casinos. However, the deadline for House committees to advance the resolution passed on Monday without the State Affairs Committee voting on it.
Andy Abboud, Las Vegas Sands’ senior vice president of government relations, told The Texas Tribune: “We have said from the beginning that we’re committed to Texas for the long haul.
“We have made great strides this session and have enjoyed meeting with lawmakers about our vision for destination resorts and answering all the questions they have.”
The current legislative session ends on May 31 and it seems there’s not enough time for the push to be successful.
Abboud said Las Vegas Sands “will continue to build on this progress over the final days of the legislation session, and over the coming months, we will continue to build community support across the state to ultimately turn this vision into a reality.”
