Iowa casino lays off more than 1,000 staff

Prairie Meadows in Altoona becomes the latest casino to furlough the majority of employees due to the Coronavirus crisis.

US.- A casino in the Des Moines area of Iowa has laid off more than 1,000 members of staff due to the financial impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Prairie Meadows in Altoona made the announcement on Monday (27 April) in a statement on its website that the service of 1,130 members of staff would no longer be required.

The casino, which boasts more than 1,700 slot machines at its venue, has been closed since March 16.

In a statement, Prairie Meadows President and CEO, Gary Palmer said: “The health and well-being of our employees, our community, and Prairie Meadows remain our top priorities.

“We want to continue assisting our employees as they navigate these difficult and challenging times.

“Teamwork and support of each other continues to be at our core of operation. We are optimistic and hopeful for the future.”

Last year, the casino posted strong numbers following the arrival of legal sports betting in Iowa.
