Encore Boston Harbor announces layoffs
The Massachusetts resort and casino will lay off 385 employees and does not expect positions to be reinstated.
US.- Encore Boston Harbor has announced it will lay off 385 workers, effective from today (Tuesday).
The company said it does not expect to reinstate the jobs this year.
The announcement comes after the company ended the second quarter with a loss of $53.8m due to closures as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Encore spent $19.3 million in the first part of the second quarter on salaries and other workers expenses, until it furloughed 3,000 employees in June.
The company said in a statement: “With continued efforts from the state to minimize the spread of COVID-19, Encore Boston Harbor continues to operate with a significantly reduced capacity in all parts of our resort.
“As we take a look at our business during these extraordinary conditions, we do not believe that all Encore Boston Harbor jobs will return in 2020.”
The news comes just days after MGM resorts announced 18,000 more layoffs. Economists warn there will be more to come across a range of industries while the virus continues to spread unless Congress offers financial support.
