DFS bill fails in Alabama
Despite a sports betting-friendly trend in the US, Alabama lawmakers have brought down a bill to legalise DFS statewide.
US.- Alabama’s own daily fantasy sports (DFS) bill had passed the Senate Tourism and Marketing Committee unanimously and headed to the floor for further consideration. However, SB325 did not get so much support and was decisively shut down before lawmakers even got a chance to vote on the matter.
The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) of 1992 could soon be revoked if the Supreme Court rules as the industry expects it to, and that has triggered a sports betting law-making trend nationwide. Despite the segment receiving major support in different states, Alabama will not be one of those legalising DFS once PASPA is no longer working.
Lawmakers had already tried to pass a bill like this before but failed to turn it into a law for three years straight. Furthermore, Huntsville-Republican state Sen. Paul Sanford, sponsor of SB325, will retire soon, so it’s unclear if a new attempt will be made in the future in order to take advantage of a thriving gambling segment worldwide.
