Danish iGaming operators face new restrictions
Lawmakers are joining forces to impose cuts in sign-up bonus offers at Danish gambling websites in order to control the segment.
Denmark.- As iGaming continues to grow and attract more and more users, governments around the world continue to assess new ways to regulate and control the segment. Sign-up bonus offers have become a target for Danish lawmakers as they believe TV promotions are “getting out of control” and want to impose a cap on them.
Social Democrat (SD) MP Jesper Petersen is leading the charge against iGaming operators as he wants to reduce bonus offers with a cap of €1,300 to €130. He has not only gathered the support of his own party but also some lawmakers of the Danish People’s Party (DPP). However, the latter hasn’t said how big they want the cut on bonus offers to be.
In addition to the DPP, the Red-Green Alliance supports the €130 cap, while the Socialist People’s Party branded the limit as “unambitious” and even proposed a complete ban on online bonus offers. However, that possibility was rejected by the SD as they consider it might be counterproductive due to the potential turn by Danish-licensed international sites to Danish-facing operations. “We [would] get more game ads with bigger bonuses, without anything we can do about it,” Petersen said.
