Alabama gambling bill tabled against Governor’s advice
Senator Greg Albritton has proposed to authorise lottery gaming but only under a tribe-exclusive scheme.
US.- Alabama lawmakers have been discussing gaming legalisation for a while now. However, the state remains one of only a few where all forms of gambling are illegal.
That looks set to change, however, after Senator Greg Albritton introduced a bill that would legalise some forms of gambling in the state.
Albritton’s proposal is lottery-focused and would give tribes exclusive rights over the state’s gambling industry.
The news comes after Alabama Governor Kay Ivey asked lawmakers to stop filing lottery Bills and appointed a study group to assess what the state should do moving forwards. .
Albritton ignored the Governor’s calls and pushed his proposal regardless.
“I’m not trying to step on anybody on this,” Albritton said. “But that commission has got to have a basis to determine what the values may or may not be. And this is one of the processes and hopefully one of the things that they may be able to get a consideration as to what the funds and what the revenue could be.”
The Senate Tourism Committee will take on the Bill, but it’s unclear when it may get pushed for further debate in the Upper Chamber’s floor.
