Poker room at the Luxor Casino to close next month
The Las Vegas Luxor casino resort will close its nine-table poker room next June 18, bringing the total number of rooms in The Strip down to 18.
US.- The Las Vegas Strip poker room offer keeps shrinking and next month will be reduced to a total 18 after the Luxor casino shuts down its own. MGM officials informed casino employees last friday that the nine-table poker room will be closed next June 18.
Ever since the peak of the poker boom, the offer has drastically dropped and 22 poker rooms have closed in the last six years. This is the third closure in 2017 and comes right after the termination of the room at the Monte Carlo casino -also MGM property- last month.
But the massive reduction is not just a whim: poker room revenue in Las Vegas has deteriorated over the last few years. Despite having a major success around ten years ago, poker is not as popular as it used to be and its current figures are nowhere near the ones at that time.
According to Senior Research Analyst for the Nevada Gaming Control Board Michael Lawton, who discussed the issue with CardPlayer.com, “the proliferation of casinos across the United States has decreased the need for players to travel to Nevada to play poker.
“At this point the consensus is that traditional poker will not experience any significant growth without a national interactive component to support growth in traditional poker by introducing new players to the game.”
