Myanmar could support casinos
Casino development could be supported by the government of Myanmar.
Myanmar.- As the central government of Myanmar holds a debate with five regional state ministers to decide the future of new casinos in the country, the national Union Minister for Hotels and Tourism, Ohn Maung, suggested that authorities could support casino development in the country.
Maung stated that under a new legislation, national authorities could “allow foreigner-only casinos to operate at island resort.” Furthermore, during an interview last Friday Maung confirmed: “The ministry has no objection against them; after the law is revised, they will be allowed.”
Casino industry in Myanmar is prohibited, although illegal gaming venues are highly popular among residents and international players, who mostly come from Thailand. An important amount of national revenue is lost in Thailand as local residents usually travel to Myanmar and Cambodia to gamble.
The new casinos in Myanmar would be installed in existing hotels in order to increase entertainment and tourist offerings and develop the national income. According to the Myanmar’s newspapers, the casino proposal was presented by the governments of Mandalay, Tanintharyi, Shan, Kayin and Mon.
