Mississippi to create a lottery
State officials are considering a lottery in Mississippi borders to finance roads and bridges.
US.- A state lottery could become a reality in Mississippi as states officials think on new ideas to pay for roads and bridges. According to Republican Governor Phil Bryant, its creation is being considered as a possibility.
Bryant advanced that he might ask lawmakers to assess the establishment of a lottery in the state to help pay for infrastructure but only if the chamber of commerce of Mississippi supports it. The Magnolia State is one of just six in the US without a lottery but this may change soon if it gets voted in a special session next month.
House Speaker Philip Gunn is a Republican and a Baptist church leader from Clinton and has created a group to study a lottery despite his opposition to it. Next June 5, legislators will begin a special session to lay down next years budget before it starts on July 1.
There are currently six states in the US that don’t have a state lottery: in addition to Mississippi, Utah and Alabama have rejected it. Nevada doesn’t have one either due to their concerns on the competition it might represent to its lucrative gambling industry. Alaska and Hawaii don’t have one either.
