Mississippi would allow sports betting
Mississippi is also interested in legalising the sports betting industry despite the legal battle.
US.- Sports betting industry got another ally in the United States as Mississippi revealed its interest in regulating the sector. The state would now join the legal battle that New Jersey is heading against the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), which blocks the local attempts of allowing legal sports betting.
Current PASPA ruling only grants Delaware, Montana, Nevada and Oregon the permission to establish a legal sports betting industry. New Jersey has presented several appeals to eliminate the PASPA’s clause to legalise the sector, although the Supreme Court has not released a final resolution yet.
Meanwhile, Mississippi would have to wait for the federal assessment on the issue despite the state’s approval of the industry. Under the House Bill H967, Mississippi integrated an amendment to the 1990 Mississippi Gaming Control act that eliminates the restriction against legal sports betting operations. The amendment cannot take effect whilst PASPA is still on force.
“We did make modifications to Gaming Control Act that would allow for the Gaming Commission to regulate sports betting if it were ever to be overturned at the federal level,” told Representative Scott DeLano to the Sun Herald. “We want to be ready for any new investment that we can do in a responsible way.”
