Lottery bill moves forward in Virginia

Proposed legislation in Virginia was passed by the Senate and is close to being enforced to allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.

US.- Virginia lawmakers may soon pass a bill to allow lottery winners in the state to remain anonymous. The proposed legislation was approved by the Senate and only needs to get cleared by the House of Delegates to turn into Law.

The bill, which was introduced by Senator Lionell Spruill, passed with a 33-7 vote and was drafted to let winners submit a notice to the Virginia Lottery that they do not wish to have their name or personal information disclosed. Nonetheless, lottery officials would still be able to release the hometown of the winner and/or the amount of money won.

Should it pass the House of Delegates, Virginia would join states like Maryland and South Carolina that allow players to conceal their identities when they win the lottery. Until now, pictures of winners of “larger or unusual” prizes are released publically on many platforms like the old media or social networks.
