Indiana to approve sports betting
Sports betting industry could be legalised in Indiana under new proposal.
US.- Indiana legislators are preparing a project to legalise sports betting industry as the federal authorities could allow operations nationwide. The discussion has been taken to the US Supreme Court by the current government of New Jersey and representatives of the major sports leagues, which are against gaming expansion.
Indiana State’s lawmakers would agree on legalising the industry as soon as the Supreme Court releases its final decision on the legal battle between New Jersey and groups against sports betting industry in the country. The state could first approve a legislation and then make it effective once the Court legalizes the moodily at federal level.
“I understand where they’ll be coming from,” Republican Rep. Alan Morrison of Terre Haute said. “But it’s also important for the NCAA to understand that the landscape of gaming is changing throughout our country. I think they would hopefully have some understanding that Indiana would have rights just like the other states.”
The case is primarily centered around the fact that there is a US$150 billion illegal sports betting market in the United States each year. PASPA, a sports protection act that was passed in 1992, prevents states from offering gambling lines on sports. Nevada, Oregon, Delaware, and Montana were granted special exemptions, as all four of those states were offering some variation of sports lotteries back in 1992.
