Macau wants to close greyhound track

The city is considering turning a greyhound track into a sports facility.

Macau.- The Macau government is currently considering plans to close the Macau Yat Yuen Canidrome greyhound track to turn it into a sports facility. Last year, city officials gave the club an ultimatum to relocate or shut down the facility.

Despite receiving a July 21, 2018 deadline from the government, Macau Yat Yuen Canidrome officials said that they were expecting that they could continue the operations, even though they didn’t have a solid plan for their future yet. The greyhound track has been in the spotlight after it reported a 82 percent drop in profits in 2015 with US$600.000. According to AGBrief, analysts believe that the canidrome is outdated and unprofitable.

Paulo Martins Chan, director of the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), said: “The government’s basic direction is to develop the related land plot to improve the quality of life in the neighbourhood. It is considering modifying the land for culture and leisure, sports and education facilities, after the greyhound race track is moved from the plot.”
