UK authority boosts lottery expansion

The Rt Hon Priti Patel MP proposed looser legislation on the lottery licence process when it funds social programs.

UK.- A proposal to expand lottery operations in the UK has been introduced by the Rt Hon Priti Patel MP. The MP’s project aims to gather further funds for social development in the country through social lottery operations, which can face looser legislation when it comes to the licensing process.

Currently, “lotteries which support a specific good cause are limited in the amount of money they can raise each year to £10 million. To raise more money, charities and organisations have to take out a separate licence that can involve spending six-figure sums,” explains the official report published this week by fundraising.co.uk.

“Time is of the essence, charities providing important public services rely on the funds from their lotteries to continue to do good work.  Charities and organisations work really hard to raise this money, we cannot allow out-dated law to get in their way and have money raised from the public paying for the bureaucratic requirements of an additional license instead of the valuable work of patient and public care,” stated Rt Hon Priti Patel MP.

Last month, the House of Commons’ Public Accounts Committee (PAC) from the United Kingdom released a report where it is detailed that lottery profits directed to good causes are failing. Camelot, the operator of the UK National Lottery, has been called out by the PAC for its shortcomings.
