Opposition to New Jersey’s casinos lessens

A poll shows that New Jerseyans are slowly beginning to accept the idea.

US.- New Jersey lawmakers introduced a bill to authorise a November referendum to allow the creation of  two new casinos in the northern part of the state. The locations for these two casinos though not confirmed yet, may be the Meadowlands and East Rutherford in Jersey City.

A poll conducted by the Fairleigh Dickinson University’s and released on Tuesday, found that 50 percent of New Jersey’s citizens oppose the creation of casinos outside Atlantic City, whilst 42 percent are in favour. Back in June, the same poll reflected that 56 percent opposed allowing casinos in other parts of New Jersey and 37 percent were in favour.

Krista Jenkins, a political science professor and director of the poll explained that, “the public continues to be skeptical, and though opposition is down from levels measured last year, it remains at levels measured in previous years. The increased acceptance of expanding gambling outside of Atlantic City may be the result of receiving more clarity surrounding recent Legislative efforts to allow gambling expansion in New Jersey.”
