Online wagering increases in Australia

A new study reveals that an increase in mobile betting helped online betting get better results.

Australia.- A study commissioned by Australian research company Roy Morgan has revealed that online wagering is on the rise, despite the fact that fewer players are actually placing bets. While the number of wagers placed was down, the number of bets placed on the internet was up.

Roy Morgan showed that 3.4 million Australians placed bets on a sport or racing event in the 12 months ending March 31st, 2018 – a number that is down from the 3.7 million that was registered six years ago in the country. However, the number of Australians that make their bets using the internet increased significantly in this period of time, as 34.1 per cent of them prefer online services, up from the 15.7 per cent from 2012.

Tabcorp Holdings is the biggest operator with 17.4 per cent of the share, followed by sportsbet.com.au and Crownbet with 12.9 per cent and 8.5 per cent respectively. “The growth is clearly being driven by the increasing use of mobile phones to place bets,” said Roy Morgan.

“A majority of Australians who bet still don’t bet via the Internet. Over two-fifths of Australians who bet have not used the Internet to place a bet and these are the key market companies offering online betting need to target to grow their revenue,” Michele Levine, CEO of Roy Morgan, said in a statement after the results were released.
