Maryland, uncertain on sports betting regulation
Despite neighbouring states passing their own legislation, Maryland has yet to decide how to implement a sports betting regulation.
US.- The Supreme Court of the United States ruled against PASPA and allowed states all around the country to legalise sports betting. However, and despite several of its neighbours have already passed their own legislation to regulate the segment, Maryland remains uncertain on how to implement it.
“Money on the table is money on the table, and we don’t want to turn money down that we could bring in from sports gaming,” Delegate Frank Turner told local media. The politician, who also co-chairs the joint Committee on Gaming Oversite, spoke about a potential referendum that would be conducted no earlier than 2020: “We need to have it on the ballot, so we don’t lose the revenue that we could lose over the next two years from sports gaming,” he said.
Despite being a major casino gambling state, it’s still unclear when lawmakers will move forward to regulate sports betting. Back in March, House Bill 1014 was approved by Maryland representatives but the State Senate didn’t take further action on it, so it’s yet to be seen when the segment will have sports betting going live.
