Major investment coming to Arkansas

Should the casino ballot initiative pass today, a US$200 million hotel and convention centre is set to land in West Memphis.

US.- Arkansas could approve this Tuesday a casino ballot initiative that would bring a US$200 million venue to West Memphis. Delaware North (parent company of Southland Gaming and Racing) is expected to develop the multi-million dollar hotel and convention centre should the ballot gets passed, as Senior Vice President of Governmental Affairs Jack McNeill said.

“It would be a priority of the company to get it up and get it going,” McNeill said. However, it isn’t clear when the development of such facilities would be completed as a project that size might cause the existing facilities to be modified.

Mr McNeill also rejected a rumour that pointed a potential elimination of dog racing at the Southland Gaming and Racing. He explained there have been no discussions around the topic and it isn’t even under consideration. “I’m confident people will give this a fair shot. It will be close,” he hoped.

A recent poll conducted by Talk Business & Politics and Hendrix College has found new support for the measure that would expand gaming and casinos in Arkansas. The survey says that 49% of polled potential voters support Issue 4.

While 43% of the people surveyed said they were against it and 8% said they remain undecided, a September poll found that only 41% were supportive of the measure and 48% were against it.
