Macau to pass bill against new casinos

The outline of a bill preventing any new gaming projects from being developed on newly reclaimed land in Macau has been passed in the legislature.

Macau.- New gaming projects in Macau are facing a major hurdle as the legislature passed the outline of a bill that stops new developments from getting installed on newly reclaimed land. The bill was introduced by Secretary for Administration and Justice Sonia Chan Hoi Fan and covers five land reclamation projects that are already under development.

A standing committee in the Legislative Assembly is set to review the bill in more detail before the final version gets sent for voting in a plenary session.

The bill aims to unfold a new framework for managing Macau’s demarcated waters. That would involve the 85 square kilometres of water surrounding Macau over which the Chinese State Council gave the local government powers to administer in December 2015.

If passed, the bill could difficult the potential arrival of new international companies to the Special Administrative Region of China but that probably wouldn’t affect its already thriving gaming industry.
