India busts illegal bookies

The Indian authorities have cracked down an illegal betting operation involving briefcase set ups to take bets from clients.

India.- An illegal betting operation was hit on Monday by the Indian police and Income Tax Agents as they raided a building in Gurugram and other related locations in Goa, Noida, Delhi and Kolkata. The authorities described the illegal set up as “one of the largest illegal cricket betting operations” they’ve taken down in the last few years.

The illegal operation involved briefcases adapted with phones and a complex system to take bets and easily relocate without being caught. The police confiscated said briefcases and other technical tools related to the illegal betting system.

According to the police, the organisation was discovered while probing an unrelated Goa casino. India has been fighting illegal betting activity and, apparently, one investigation led to the other and the illegal bookies were caught.

Despite the proliferation of clandestine gambling activity in the country, India refuses to regulate land-based and online betting. That seems to be the only solution as citizens are interested in the industry but have to appeal to illegal operations to fulfill their gambling necessities. However, the authorities are just assessing the possibility through a study by the Law Commission of India but are still far from achieving progress.
