A report by PlayIllinois shows sports betting in Illinois generated more than $600m in March, making the state the third-largest gambling market in the US.

US.- Sports betting in Illinois hit a new record in March with more than $600m wagered.

The numbers were published in a report by PlayIllinois, a research company specialising in the US state’s regulated online gaming and sports betting market.

The new record represents an increase of 24.3 per cent from February and makes Illinois the third-largest gambling market in the US.

However, according to analysts, the upcoming in-person registration required for online sports betting will impact on the numbers, and make it hard for Illinois to maintain the rate.

Joe Boozell, analyst for PlayIllinois.com, said: “March Madness helped deliver a huge month for Illinois, but it is the last hurrah for the state’s rapid growth.

“It will still be one of the largest US markets because of its population, but it will be difficult to maintain its current status as number three. No matter how appealing the market, there is no easy way to overcome the inconvenience of in-person registration.
