DFS in Louisiana to be decided by parish
Voters in the state are set to decide on a parish-by-parish basis whether to legalise DFS contests.
US.- Louisiana voters will decide on a parish-by-parish basis whether they want to legalise fantasy sports contests or not. DraftKings and FanDuel, the biggest DFS companies in the country, have already allocated US$1 million to the measure.
Rep. Kirk Talbot, who sponsored the bill, said that if it wins passage in a parish, people will be able to log into the contest sites if they travel into that parish even if they don’t necessarily live there, AP News reported. The sites will use geofencing, a technology to wall off designated areas in order to block people who use computers or mobile phones outside of those spaces.
“It was never billed as an economic driver. It’s something that’s fun,” Talbot said. Even if the measure receives the green light, lawmakers would still need to licence, regulate and tax fantasy sports contests before people from Louisiana can play them. “Nobody’s going to be betting on fantasy sports in January. It’s going to be next fall before we get it all in line,” he said.
