County voters to decide on new Louisiana casino

The Tangipahoa Parish Council will let voters decide whether to allow a US$100 million casino in the county.

US.- November 6th will be an important date for Tangipahoa Parish county as voters will decide whether to allow a US$100 million casino and events centre be built near the Tangipahoa River. The decision to include the matter in the ballot was made after a 6-3 vote in the local Council.

Should voters favour the project, the casino is set to be located in the Robert area off of Interstate-12 and Highway 445. However, the Tangipahoa River still needs to be approved as an added site for a riverboat casino by the Louisiana Legislature.

Nonetheless, according to Peninsula Pacific, the venue would be land-based and near the river or on a barge by the river. It would include an indoor and outdoor events centre, conference centre, oyster bar, upscale dining area and a farmer’s market buffet.

The casino is set to bring hundreds of jobs and other business and economic development opportunities for the parish, proponents say. On the flip side, the opposition has based their arguments on “gambling being immoral” and the alleged drainage and other issues that a large construction project could bring.
