CJEU will issue its ruling on Gibraltar’s remote gambling status

Following Brexit, the EU Court of Justice started its review of Gibraltar’s online gambling industry.

UK.- The principal law court of the European Union economic community will give its ruling on whether the British overseas territory can be treated as a single party member when it comes to its online gambling industry.

The EU Court of Justice (CJEU) has been asked by the UK High Court on whether Gibraltar has the right to be considered a separate member from the UK within EU laws. This petition is part of an ongoing tax dispute between industry body the Gibraltar Betting and Gaming Association (GBGA) and UK HMRC.

The GBGA has requested CJEU officials to clarify if the industry services should continue to be treated as European trade under the terms of the ‘Treaty of Functioning of the European Union’.

Gibraltar has been operational come to more than 35 online betting operators. With over 4000 sector employees, the online gambling industry remains Gibraltar’s largest employer.
