Mississippi Governor is open to discussing state lottery

The subject has been a sidebar debate in the state for years, but the Governor Phil Bryant recently hinted that the discussion would not be such a bad idea.

US.- Earlier this year, the Mississippi House of Representatives voted in favour of an amendment added to Senate Bill 2541 that would create a state lottery, but it was later stripped. It’s certainly not the first time it has been attempted to create a lottery in Mississippi, but it is surprising that someone from the Government showed some support to the industry.

Phil Bryant, current Governor of the american state, said that he would be open to a general discussion regarding a statewide lottery. “However, I would be opposed to this particular revenue being dedicated to specific expenses, such as public education. Our children’s future should not be left to a game of chance,” he added.

Rep. Tommy Reynolds, who authored the lottery amendment that the House of Representatives passed this year, said that lottery would generate US$160 million a year for the state. Mississippi House Gaming Committee Chairman Richard Bennett, said: “I’m often bombarded by lawmakers and residents pushing a lottery. I would like to see the committee do an in-depth analysis of what money, benefits and problems a lottery would bring.”
