Puerto Rico to legalise sports betting
After PASPA got revoked, Puerto Rico seeks to jump into the sports betting segment regulation and introduced its own bill.
Puerto Rico.- Governor Ricardo Rosselló Nevares has filed a proposal to regulate sports betting in Puerto Rico. After US liberalised the market, its territories seek to update legislation in order to benefit from the segment as soon as possible.
“This industry has the potential to turn Puerto Rico into a state-of-the-art jurisdiction, which will allow us to establish a new market that will have a positive effect on our economy,” Nevares said. “We have developed aggressive legislation that aims to market the island nationally and internationally as an attractive destination for the millions of people who bet on sporting events.”
Proposed legislation highlights that sports betting will make US$3 billion in the US only. Estimates show that will be the annual figure to be reached by 2023, which is why Puerto Rico wants a piece of it.
The governor thanked Representative Nestor Alonso Vega “who pushed the bill in the House and will oversee its treatment as Tourism Commission president.”
“I’m sure the industry will have a possitive impact both on the economy and tourism in the island. The Tourism Commission will continue to work to turn it into Law, as part of the vision to get Puerto Rico to achieve its maximum potential as a tourism destination,” Vega said.
