Pennsylvania hosts a meeting on legislation
The slot revenue distribution was recently declared unconstitutional by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
US.- The House Gaming Oversight Committee will carry out tomorrow Tuesday 18 a public hearing to resolve the distribution of gambling revenues in Pennsylvania. Last month, the Supreme Court backed casinos’ claim to end the payment of 4 percent of slot machine revenue as a “local share assessment” to certain host communities.
The Court declared that the tax payment affected differently the 12 Pennsylvania casinos and ruled in favor of Mount Airy Casino Resort’s complaint, which proved that casinos that generate less revenue than others pay a heavier tax burden. With the latest Supreme Court resolution, the State would perceive fewer incomes to destine to social aid institutions and community activities.
The legislative session will start today with the reunion of lawmakers to debate the next steps to create a gambling tax bill for Pennsylvania in order to conclude the legal problem. During the meeting, legislators will also set plans for state budgets, public pension reform, expanded liquor sales and medical marijuana.
Pennsylvania casinos generate nearly US$140 million to distribute over the municipalities for police and rescue services, economic development projects and road and sewer work. The public hearing will reach a solution on the impact of the local distribution of slots revenue and it will feature testimony from entities that distribute the aid.
