Lottery in North Carolina moves towards online sector
The lottery leaders in North Carolina are interested in expanding the business in the state to the online sector.
US.- The North Carolina lottery commission has voted in favour of offering digital lottery games. The commission voted through the lottery website but still hasn’t revealed whether the games will be offered or not.
According to AP, the leaders in North Carolina are interested in moving lottery operations to the online sector. They believe that in order to progress the lottery service in the state they need to make technological changes.
“We’re seeing some other games that we generally rely on a great deal dissipate,” commission member Morgan Beam said at the latest meeting. “We’ve talked for hours on end … I don’t see that path without some technological advancements in different types of games.”
The lottery fiscal staff has investigated the possible financial changes and a preliminary report says that digital instant sales could reach US$780 million annually by its fifth year. The commission voted to direct the lottery staff to come up with a business plan for digital instants.
North Carolina Retail Merchants Association President Andy Ellen opposes the idea. He said: “If a current lottery player can sit at their residence on a Saturday and play an online lottery game over and over without leaving the comfort of their home, then traditional lottery retailers will eventually lose sales to this activity and it will be too late to reverse course.”
