Monticello Raceway set to close

The casino operations at the casino and raceway are expected to close on April 23.

US.- Empire Resorts, parent company of Monticello, has announced that casino operations at the Monticello Casino and Raceway are set to close on April 23, or around that date. The harness racing track will remain open.

The company revealed that electronic gaming operations will close in April, as announced to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing this week. However, the harness racing track will remain open “for now”, though there are no guarantees about the track’s long-term future.

Employees at the Monticello facility have the option to take jobs at the nearby Resorts World Catskill casino or receive severance packages. “We’re happy about the fact that they have offered jobs to laid-off members and we’re constructively talking with the company about adding additional severance,” Hotel Trades Council, the union that represents most of the workers, said in a statement.

The company said that the goal is to avoid cannibalising revenues from the 2,157 slot machines and 150 table games that Resorts World Catskills currently features. “This move will allow us to not only increase operational efficiencies but enhance the casino experience at Resorts World Catskills for our guests with access to the industry’s newest slot products and more than 150 live table games,” said Ryan Eller, Empire Resorts’ CEO, in a statement.
