Italy’s sports revenue down, online casinos set record

Revenue from sports betting operations decreased 17.2% year-on-year in January but online casinos set a record.

US.- Italy’s gambling regulator, Agenzia della Dogane e dei Monopoli (ADM) released a report this week that shows that sports betting revenue totalled €124.6 million in January, which represents a 17.2% decline when compared to the same period in 2018. Despite these results, online casinos set a record last month.

The year-on-year decline represents approximately €26 million less than January 2018, as during that month the regulator registered €150.5 million in sports betting revenue. ADM estimates that the decline comes from the winter break in Italy’s Serie A football league.

Retail betting earnings also experienced a shaky January: the market generated €66 million in revenue, or a 26% fall when compared to January 2018.

While sports betting and retail betting suffered losses in January, online casinos set a revenue record as they totalled €72 million in January, an increase of 20.5% year-on-yeaar. PokerStars led the market as it claimed a 10.6% share, while Lottomatica and Sisal followed the company with an 8.3% and 7.6% respectively.
