India state to implement online lottery
The Indian State of Maharashtra could soon approve the operation of online lottery services.
India.- Although the iGaming industry is currently banned in India, the State of Maharashtra is evaluating the transference of the licensed paper lottery services to an online platform. This development comes following market studies showing that the online lottery modality generates further revenues for both the company and the state.
“At present, the Maharashtra government runs a paper lottery system. A proposal has been made to introduce an online lottery system which should be unveiled by April this year,” Maharashtra principal secretary (planning) Vijay Kumar Gautam commented. He also added that Maharashtra’s online lottery will be based on Kerala’s lottery model.
“The north-eastern states are getting good revenue. The online lotteries of other states do good business in Mumbai,” Vijay Kumar Gautam added. According to latest reports, Maharashtra’s paper lottery generates € 16.8 million per year, and the government predicts an increase.
The National Law Commission of India is preparing a proposal to present to the Congress in order to set legal and licensed online gaming operations countrywide. However, the authorities do recommend several restrictions to prevent problem gambling, money laundering and further illegal activities related to unregulated gaming.
